A technical scientific association, Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. (DIN), engages in standardization activities that advance rationalization, quality assurance, environmental protection, safety and communication in industry, technology, science, government, and in the public domain. Recognized by the German Federal Government as Germany’s national standards body, DIN has been a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) since 1951. DIN is organized along two distinct missions, standardization and business activities. The profits DIN generates from its business activities are the single largest contribution for the non-profit core activities of standardization. Promotion funds paid by industry directly finance the DIN standards committees. Funds from public authorities are used for specific standardization projects in the public interest.
DIN represents the interests of German standardization at both the national and international levels. Maintaining a collection of more than 38,000 documents, DIN offers standards covering everything from parasol patio heaters to standard methods for analysis of contaminants in water to screws and bolts. Standards offered by DIN provide companies and individuals doing business in Germany or with German businesses a solid basis for quality, safety, and minimum functionality expectations.
